About me

Hello, my name is Gilda,

I am Italian. I was born and raised in Florence and even though I am very happy here in Orange County, I still miss Italy. This is why I decided to create this group “Italiani D.O.C.”. D.O.C. stands for “Controlled Denomination of Origin” which is an Italian quality assurance label used for food products and especially wines. The acronym seemed right to me even if this is not about wine or food, but people. There are many Italian groups around Orange County, but none of which is organized by a true born and raised Italian. If you have some kind of ties with Italy, if you’ve visited my country or want to visit it, if you are curious about our culture and want to learn more, if you want to freshen up your Italian or even learn it from scratch, then you are very welcome! So if you as me, would love to make new friends, meet and speak in Italian, exchanging impressions, memories or whatever comes to mind…. then let’s meet for a drink, a snack and some good conversation.

Although the idea is to carry the conversations in Italian, all levels of Italian proficiency are welcome. If you are a beginner, and the only Italian’s words you know are pizza and ciao, you are still very welcome. As a group, we’ll love to introduce you and encourage you to learn our language and culture.

Our Meetups are every week, usually on Tuesdays. The venue may change from time to time, but we have a "home base" in Laguna HIlls, which will remain constant. The focus of this group is on Italian conversations, outings, parties, Italian movies, music and wines, with also food demonstrations and cooking classes. Pretty much everything Italian you may be interested and curious about. I am very open to any suggestions you may have, therefore please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, curiosities, requests, etc.

The regular once a week conversational Meetups are free of charge, but Italian group classes and individual classes will also be available upon request. If you are interested, please send me an e-mail and let me know. I am trying to put together a group of people that would like to receive Italian lessons. The one hour group lessons have a minimal fee of $5.00 per person, for a minimum of six people. Individual one hour lessons will be available for $20.00. The group classes will be taught by myself and will be held once a week every Tuesday at 6:00pm, right before the regular conversational Meetup, which starts at 7:00pm. For the individual lessons, I will obviously schedule them separately with each student.

Dulcis infundo, I am planning also on a fantastic and very special treat. Cooking and demostration “hands on” classes, taught by a real “Italian mamma/chef”. She will come directly from Tuscany, hopefully really soon. I will keep you posted. For the extremely curious smile; I am including her Facebook page name “Mamma Mariella”
